Showing HallBoard on your screen

Your board is a web page, at an address like yourhall.hallboard.uk. Any screen that can open a web page in full screen and stay on can show it. Here are the usual ways, easiest first.

Before you start, whatever you choose:

HallBoard Player Easiest

Our small plug-in box. It comes set up for your board and opens it by itself, in full screen, every time it is switched on. Plug it into the TV's HDMI socket, plug in the power, and give it your wifi (or connect a cable). Nothing else to do. The three-step setup sheet is printable.

Amazon Fire TV Stick Cheap and common

A Fire TV Stick costs about £30 to £60 and plugs into the TV's HDMI socket. It opens web pages in the Silk browser (already installed on most models, or free from the Appstore).

  1. Open Silk, go to your board's address, and choose to bookmark it.
  2. Choose full screen (in the browser's menu). Hide the on-screen menus.
  3. In the Fire TV Settings, find Display & Sounds and set the screen saver to never start and the sleep timer to never.

The catch: a Fire TV Stick does not open a web page by itself when it is switched on. After a power cut, someone has to open Silk again. To make it start by itself, install a kiosk app such as Fully Kiosk Browser, which can be set to open your board when the stick starts. It is a paid app (a small one-off cost per device, so check the price). We haven't tested every Fire TV model, so try yours before you rely on it.

Google TV Streamer, Chromecast with Google TV, and Android TV boxes

These run Android, so they work much like a Fire TV Stick. Install a browser from the Play Store (or Fully Kiosk Browser for a proper kiosk that starts by itself), open your board, bookmark it, and turn off the screensaver. Look for the Ambient mode or Screensaver setting and set it to Never.

Casting a browser tab from a laptop does not work well as a permanent display, because it stops when the laptop sleeps or leaves.

Smart TVs (Samsung, LG, Sony and others)

Most have a built-in web browser. Open it, go to your board's address and bookmark it, then use full screen. These browsers usually don't start by themselves after a power cut, and some are slow or limited, so a smart TV is fine for a trial but we'd suggest a Player or stick for a permanent display. Some commercial signage TVs have a "browser" or "web kiosk" mode that does open a set address on start-up. Check your TV's manual.

A spare PC, laptop or mini PC (Windows, Mac or Linux)

An old computer connected to the TV works well.

A tablet

An old Android tablet on a stand, with Fully Kiosk Browser, is a good small display for a hall noticeboard. Set it to always stay on, open your board at start-up and stay plugged in. An iPad can do the same using Guided Access (in Accessibility settings) to stop the screen sleeping or leaving the page.
